Ex- Petroleum Minister, Diezani, wanted for massive corruption laments decay in societal values

A former Nigerian minister of Petroleum Resources,  Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is wanted for multiple counts of corruption and embezzlement has lamented the decay in societal values among Nigerians and the glorification of internet Fraudsters.

She said Internet scammers widely referred to as ‘Yahoo boys’ in Nigeria were now role models in the country due to drop in moral values.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is held up in the UK where she is also being investigated for money laundering, was a guest speaker at a virtual event delivering a lecture, which was also attended by her former boss, Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday, a report by PUNCH said.

Video clips of the event organised by the Ijaw National Development Group, were posted on twitter by Jackson Ude, an aide to a former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Mrs Alison-Madueke lamented that Nigerian youth were looking up to internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo Yahoo.

She said, “The ones that have swag, the Yahoo Yahoo boys as my son would say; these in short, are the role models they are looking at. These are the ones that reinforce negative societal norms and values.

“This is a travesty of an unfolding tragedy for us. Why have I spent time talking about fatherless homes and the impact it has on our children? The truth of the matter is that an irresponsible boy tends to become an irresponsible man and it is therefore a vicious cycle. If you plant yam, you cannot harvest plantain,” she told the audience.

Diezani said there were no shortcuts to progressing in life, adding that only hard work could guarantee success.

The former minister added, “There are no shortcuts to working your way up the ladder of life. Progressing in life, in work and relationships either marital or otherwise is always dependent on consistent effort and hard work.

“As we create more responsible young men, we will generate more responsible fathers which will in turn engender a more sustainable society and build a greater nation of successful Ijaw men and women.”

Diezani said societal values had collapsed mainly because of weak family bonds caused by broken homes.

Diezani thanked ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, for empowering women during his tenure as the President.

But In the posted video, Mrs Alison-Madueke never spoke on corruption in public office and how that affects societal values.

The former minister is alleged to have committed offences bordering on abuse of office, bribery and money laundering between 2011 and 2015, while in office.

Some of the beneficiaries of the corrupt act have been convicted in Nigeria.
