Enugu Community In Fear After Unknown Gunmen Killed Four Police Officers

Iwollo community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State is still in shock after unknown gunmen attacked the police station in the community on Tuesday.

While businesses are gradually opening, some workers of some establishments in the area are shunning their workplaces.

A lecturer at Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, who does not want to be mentioned, said, “We are yet to come to terms on how these hoodlums gained access to the station and caused this kind of carnage. I won’t go to work today, though all seems to have returned to normalcy.”

A food seller, Nkechi Orba, said, “What happened shocked me. It has never happened around here. The police station was completely burnt. Four policemen were also killed. God forbid. I will open my shop, but will be cautious.”

The station remained deserted as at the time of filing this report.

The Enugu State commissioner of police, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, yesterday, led members of his management team and operational/tactical commanders to assess the level of damage in the aftermath of the attack.

The commissioner also ordered investigations ‘to fish out the assailants and their cohorts’, according to the state police public relations officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe.

Ndukwe said, “Four of the operatives, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, were later confirmed dead in the hospital, while parts of the station were set ablaze by the assailants.”

An eye witness also said the attackers had freed suspects in the police custody before setting it ablaze.
