Nigeria has lost over N24.72bn ($60.14m) as a result of the Federal Government’s Twitter ban since June 5.
NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool (COST), which estimates the economic impact of an internet disruption, said Nigeria loses N102.9m every hour due to the ban.
A week after the ban took effect, Twitter revealed in a tweet that they had reached out to the government and were to open discussions to address the mutual concerns and see the platform restored.
“Today marks one week since Twitter was blocked in Nigeria. We have informed the Nigerian government that we are ready to meet for an open discussion to address mutual concerns and see the service restored. We remain advocates for the free and Open Internet everywhere”, they said in the tweet.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had said app was suspended due to “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence’ as the reason for the suspension”.
